As the Christmas season ramps up, we are asking that you consider the Manitoba Chapter of the Canadian Celiac Association as a part of your holiday gift giving. The Manitoba Chapter has decided to approach those living with Celiac Disease in Manitoba to remember that not everyone is able to put gluten free food on their table. This past year has been particularly hard and appears to be becoming more difficult for individuals.
The need for safe gluten free food has increased.
Please consider setting aside a small portion of your budget to support our continued Manitoba Harvest Gluten Free Hamper Initiative. The Manitoba Chapter has had a relationship with Harvest Manitoba for a number of years previous to the pandemic where donated gluten free food was collected at our in-person meetings and dropped off at Harvest.
It came to our attention in February 2021, that Harvest was not able to sort for Gluten Free food as the pandemic had restricted their activities and they had moved to providing hampers to those in need.
The Manitoba Chapter began the Gluten Free Food Hamper Program in partnership with Harvest Manitoba to ensure that those who require gluten free food have access to it through the Harvest Supported Food Banks across Manitoba.
A subcommittee of the Board and volunteers work to solicit donations from gluten free food producers and purchased additional GF food as needed to be placed into the Hampers. To date, we have had many packing events since beginning this initiative where individuals gave of their time to pack hampers and WE THANK ALL OF YOU! We have packed over 2200 hampers since we started with over 1000 in this past year alone. We estimate that each hamper has cost the chapter approximately $12 but we are seeing with our upcoming packing event that the price for procurement has gone up. We hope you can perhaps cover the cost of a hamper or a little more.
Please take into consideration that the Chapter provides tax receipts for donations by cheque over $20. All electronic donations through Canada Helps or PayPal through our webpage automatically have a receipt generated.
Celiac Canada’s Federal Advocacy Working Group has secured a federal E-petition that is now ready for signatures sponsored by Member of Parliament Sonia Sidhu, calling for the federal government to change the tax policy with respect to claiming the incremental cost of gluten-free food.
Celiac Canada is asking for your support to sign an e-petition calling upon the Government of Canada to provide tax relief to Canadians with Celiac disease by amending the Income Tax Act, in the form of an annual $1,000 refundable tax credit, together with a waiver of any requirement to retain receipt.
As you well know, People with celiac disease require a strict, medically required gluten-free diet to control their autoimmune disease. Gluten-free products are up to 300% more expensive than traditional food with gluten. This creates a large economic burden on our community. There is no cure or other prescription treatments for celiac disease to replace this therapy.
Celiac Canada and the organizers have until November 10th at 4:00pm EDT to get as many signatures as possible. Celiac Canada’s goal is to get at least 20,000+ signatures from our community, friends, colleagues and allies.
Please widely share this link below in your networks, social media, newsletters and personally with your family and network to encourage them to sign to support you and your family with celiac disease. We will be creating some social posts that you can also share/forward.
